Update 26th April

Work on Marigot’s deck fittings and woodwork continue. The old varnish was removed last week and layers of marine varnish are now applied after sealing. Jim uses a new orbital sander after the first one burnt out on Thursday. Ray puts the first light grey top coat on the winch after the primer has dried.

What is it ?

Good cut dude. Now varnish it.

Skylight and Vent

Anchor winch

Ray sands the superstructure round the saloon windows. More of a restoration than a refit, we really begin to appreciate the classic identity of Marigot and as work proceeds we are increasingly impressed with the quality of her original build and materials used.

Susan polishes the interior metal fittings and puts up with Ray’s music in the saloon with occasional good humour.

Trish did the varnish last week and the cabinets look superb with the metalwork refitted

Sorry, wrong picture.

This is the right picture

Sunday 18th April - Boathandling Training, Taymara Training, Boat Maintenance, Lifejacket servicing on board Marigot and North Carr in Victoria Dock.

Maintenance work on Marigot proceeded while she was used in Victoria Dock for training in boathandling and coming alongside.

.

Ray, Trish and Mick begin to strip the old varnish from the woodwork at the stern.

Pat, Iain and Susan work on removing the degraded varnish on the forward lockers.

A mobile generator provides the power for both an orbital and a belt sander. The blue surface is being stripped back to be repainted in a light grey non slip covering.

Jim gets on with his polishing after spending some time on the wheel.

The rods are fitted across Marigot’s skylights and have been removed for cleaning while the skylights are stripped back to bare wood.

We’re unsure what Jim’s pretending not to laugh at

Maybe it’s the same thing that Susan’s not laughing at.

Yip. Reckon so... There’s a lot of nonsense on board today and no excuse for any of it. This must be Taymara - MVS would never allow this.

6th April 2008

RYA Advanced Powerboat Course.

Congratulations to Jim Moir, David Paterson, Chris Pryke, Ian Macintosh, Ian Higson on passing their RYA Advanced Powerboat course at Port Edgar. This entails bombing about the Forth at 20+ knots in the dark and not getting lost or even being late. Keep it up chaps, white uniform hats are in the post to all of you.

Until then....keep pumping Dave.

Rib Training - Sundays at Davy Anderson’s Boatyard, Newport

Checking the rib before launching.

No, this is good fun. Ray is just concentrating and he’s normally quite jocular.

Not to be outdone - with 60 mighty horses roaring in his ears, Jim pulls a funny face too.

Piglet’s first launch of the winter and her engine maintains an impressively low carbon footprint. Don’t let go of the rope please.

Man overboard manoeuvers.....  catch the life-ring.

Piglet charges round to another rescue near the Road Bridge

Sunday training Victoria Dock

With members meeting on board North Carr Lightship at 11.00, training in boathandling has been proceeding using Marigot while Badger is out of commission. (Routine maintenance tasks may take precedent over this).

You’ve stopped. Keep pumping.

Marigot approaching to come alongside North Carr - more difficult coming in “starboard side to” like this. The dock wall and Badger tied up at North Carr’s bow conspire against an easy approach.

Badger and Sparling seen from the deck of Marigot on a beautiful winters morning with a mirrored surface on the water  just asking to be stirred up.

Ray shows what Sparling can do.

Jim tucking Marigot in alongside North Carr, after first carefully avoiding Badger.

Thursday Training North Carr

Chart work for the RYA Powerboat level 2 class on Thursday 7th April

Yip, we’ll go to the Horseshoe buoy if that’s what you want.

The Dolphin Space Programme (DSP) is an accreditation scheme for wildlife tour boat operators. It is an innovative, co-operative approach to sustainable wildlife tourism, launched on World Oceans Day, 8 June 1995. The aim of the DSP is to encourage people who go out to observe dolphins and other marine wildlife to "watch how they watch" and to respect the animal's need for space.

This was attended by several members of MVS Tay. Lunch was provided. The day gave a good insight into the lessons learned over many years of Dolphin watching in the Moray Firth.

Wild Scotland - The Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching Code - Members of MVS Tay attended this one day course in Birnam on the 25th February 2008

WiSe (Wildlife Safe) accredication schemes are aimed at boat operators and crew who encounter wildlife when on the water and are aimed at communicating current best wildlife watching practise to those interested in creating the minimum of disturbance to the creatures we share the water with.

Wild Scotland and Jim Moir.  Jim introduces our unit to the meeting.

It was an interesting meeting with some good guest speakers. Lunch was provided. We are now accredited “safe operators” in the field of marine wildlife watching.
