MVS Tay - Training

Nautical Training with MVS Tay offers the chance to learn the wide variety of maritime skills needed to go to sea .

Hands on instruction in seamanship and boathandling, communications, marine engineering, and navigation runs alongside regular classes in navigation and seamanship on board the North Carr Lightship.

Training Afloat

Training in Tay Unit takes place on board all our vessels which are well used and frequently at sea Training afloat takes place in our 5 seagoing vessels between April and November and during the winter in Victoria Dock, Dundee

Regular Thursday evening classes in Navigation, Seamanship, Engines and Electrical Systems take place on board North Carr lightship, Victoria Dock, Dundee.

“Working with Tides” - a 2 part course that takes place over two Thursdays

Regular Sunday Training and practical work from April to October is on our seagoing vessels on the Tay. In winter it is based on the North Carr lightship, Victoria dock, Dundee from 11.30 in the morning to around 16.00

Sunday training is practical, hands on work ranging from maintenance on the vessels to boathandling practise in Victoria Dock during winter.

From April to October all vessels are active on the Tay and practical training is given at sea at weekends and throughout each week.

Trainees at the helm of Badger practise a set range of  manoeuvres in the relative calm of Victoria Dock during the winter months - great training before we take to the open water.

Four outboards need to be serviced, here are two of them - A British Seagull and an Evinrude 9.9. Trainees will do this work themselves on Sundays as part of their practical training in marine engines and mechanical systems.

Boat Maintenance and Refit - General maintenance is carried on throughout the year while the vessels are slipped and refitted in the early spring. This is an integral part of our training.

Maintenance work is carried out in Victoria Dock throughout the winter and at Davy Anderson’s boatyard in the early part of each year.
