Dundee Hogmanay Celebrations 2008

As in previous years the North Carr Lightship is the focal point of Dundee's Hogmanay celebrations

It's a memorable night for us, it's also good PR for our unit and the MVS as we get good coverage in the media.

Folk band "Real Mackay" provided the music up to midnight. .

The Band played for the crowd up to midnight. Then North Carr's foghorn awoke from a year's hibernation and came to life with a mighty blast. Thanks once again to Piper Bill Richmond who played in the New Year for us after the echos from the horn subsided..

Meanwhile, on board Marigot, preparations were being made for a wee firework display.

This clown shouldn't really be trusted with matches let alone rockets and aerial cannon.

Missed again. Damn.

"Dangermouse" was blown up and launched, well, sort of dropped into the water, in case of need, should anyone fall in. They didn't. (She's the wee grey sausage alongside Badger).

Later, drinks in the crew's quarters.

From the right - North Carr, Marigot, Badger, Sparling and Dangermouse

Training in boathandling. Coming alongside North Carr in Marigot. Forget the wheel at this speed, the rudders are too small. A short burst of starboard engine now.

Slightly too shallow an angle. Let her go ahead now and then be ready to pull the bow in with a short burst of port engine astern. Then correct the impending collision. Be prepared for abuse.

Susan seriously concentrating. Now that she doesn't steer round in circles all the time she's trusted to park 45 tons with no brakes up against an unyielding stone wall.

Dave's just the same but he's got a beard.

Badger and Sparling tied up alongside North Carr.

She is a real icon.
