MVS Tay vessel Badger - Maritime Volunteer Service

Badger - 34ft. Nelson class launch

Badger is an extremely capable, seaworthy vessel, fully equipped with the latest navigational aids and safety equipment.

She has a full schedule which encompasses working as one of our training vessels, commercial sailing as a passenger craft, and in addition she fulfills many other functions in support of our local community.

She has been fitted with a Simrad integrated Radar/GPS/Chart Plotter/Echo Sounder. The same equipment was used by Helen McArthur on her recent round the world exploit and by the BBC crew filming the recent underwater documentary on the Amazon.

Badger is fitted with twin 200hp Leyland turbocharged diesels. These are a marinised version of the engines originally fitted to the Tiger Cub bus (not the bike). Like the Morris Oxford and the Royal Enfield Bullet, the tooling for these engines was sent to India, where they went into production again.

Badger is slipped every year (around March/April) and extensively refitted.

During the 2005 refit her hull, and engines were worked on extensively. Her entire navigation system and her fuel system have been replaced, and new props are due to be fitted.
