The furthest afield member of MVS Tay is Martin Smith from Kent who sends this update on the restoration of a splendid vintage lifeboat that he is involved with.

This vessel would look great at next year's Arbroath Sea Fest .....?! She would sit well beside "The Reaper"

Martin Smith is also the new Moderator (sorry Martin - Super Moderator) of the MVS Members Forum and as such he has 6 stars, unlike most mortals

Congratulations on your appointment Martin, and we all look forward to seeing you soon. You know about the biscuits but I have to say that our expectation is increasing as time passes.

*MVS Tay supports vintage lifeboat, the William and Kate Johnston.*
The 'Bill and Kate' as she is affectionately known was built in 1923 in Cowes as a technology prototype for a line of lifeboats that are still going strong. The first to have twin propellors in tunnels and the last the be fitted with sails, she marks a turning point in rescue boat design.
The present owner, more accurately current custodian, of this lovely historic vessel is keen to keep her in good shape and most of all to keep her in use. Elderly wooden boats are not everyone's idea of fun, but the rewards for carrying this one into the future are great.
As a previous member of the Maritime Volunteer Service, the owner was delighted when a unit of volunteers came forward to help. The Service was keen to offer any help they could, to help keep her afloat. This was back in Summer and it has been a short list of jobs that has taken a long time to meet: The deck has needed recaulking, damp damage to the engine room beams had to be removed and replaced, the false mizzen mast removed and worst of all an injector fault on one engine needed some serious attention. Now, in the depths of Winter the majority of the work has been done and the next season is eagerly awaited.
The MVS works hard all over the country to help preserve maritime traditions and keep skills alive, recruiting from all parts of society they offer training and support which benefit all our coastal communities.
